I have HUGE NEWS for 100% disabled veterans who own their home in California!
Beginning January 2027, there is a major update to the California property tax exemption for disabled veterans. My previous article about the disabled veterans property tax exemption applies to property tax bills through 2026.
Starting in 2027, the exemption will significantly increase.
New for 2027
So what is big change for 2027? In 2026, the basic exemption was $180,671, and the low-income exemption was $271,009.
Beginning in 2027, for properties with an assessed value above $371,778, the basic exemption will be 50% of the value that does not exceed $1,000,000. In addition, the low-income exemption will be 100% of the value that does not exceed $1,000,000.
In the event that the property value happens to be $371,778 or less, then the current (2026 and prior) program will apply.
Who Qualifies for this Exemption?
The same rules apply as before:
This exemption is for veterans who, because of injury or disease from military service, are:
- blind in both eyes, OR
- have lost the use of two or more limbs, OR
- are totally disabled.
Totally disabled means that the United States Veterans Administration or military service has rated the disability at 100%.
In addition, this exemption is available to any unmarried surviving spouse of a person who, as a result of service-connected injury or disease, died while on active duty, or after being honorably discharged.
Most importantly, the exemption is for the applicant’s principal residence in California only.
Who Qualifies for the Low Income Exemption?
So far, the only schedules for income limits I see online are the limits for the previous exemption limit. If I find out that these numbers will change for 2027, I will post them right away. Please contact me if you see any new information, so I can update my website.
According to the text of the bill, the new low income limit is $83,474.

For More Information
So far, I can’t find too much information about this new benefit, but you can read the text for SB 296 here.
