UPDATE: The assistance was previously 80% of unpaid rent. Now, there are funds available to cover 100% of unpaid rent. In addition, there are funds available to cover utility bills.
Landlord rental assistance is available in California! If you are a landlord, and missing rent payments due to COVID, you may qualify. The landlord rental assistance program reimburses landlords for 100% of unpaid rent. This is for rent that covers the period between April 1, 2020 and September 30, 2021.
Who is Eligible?
Eligible tenants: this program is for tenant households who are at or less than 80% of the Area Median Income or who have been unemployed for 90 days or more.
In addition, this is a joint effort. Both landlord AND tenant need to apply for the program.
Landlord Rental Assistance – Get Started
To apply for landlord rental assistance, sign up at the Housing is Key website. After the landlord completes the application, the program will contact the tenant to complete their application.
Property Managers
If you are a property manager, you can apply on behalf of the landlord. First, the landlord must sign up for an account at the Housing in Key website. Secondly, the landlord needs to add your name to their account as a “designee.” Once that happens, you can use the website to apply for the program.
For More Information
For assistance or more information, call the CA COVID-19 Rent Relief Call Center at (833) 430-2122. California COVID landlord rental assistance is funded by the federal Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021.
