San Diego County residents are eligible for a FREE Weather-Based Smart Irrigation Controller.
Both homeowners AND renters are eligible! A professional will come to your home and replace your old controller with a weather-based smart irrigation controller. You could save $$$ on your water bill.
WaterSmart’s Free Smart Irrigation Controllers
WaterSmart San Diego currently offers free weather-based smart irrigation controllers. Funding comes from Synergy, the parent company of SDGE. The program provides both the equipment and installation – at no cost to you.
The more water you conserve, the more you save with lower water bills!
How Do I Request a Free Smart Irrigation Controller?
First, call the Water Authority program at (888) 272-8394. Second, they will help you schedule an appointment for the installation. As of June 2023, they are booking appointments about two weeks out. The San Diego County Water Authority will send a professional to install your new weather-based smart irrigation controller. In addition, they provide education on outdoor water-use efficiency.
Unlike some rebate programs, you will not pay for anything – the program covers materials and installation up front.
In addition, there are no income requirements for this program. Anyone with an older irrigation controller is eligible!
All San Diego water districts are currently participating in this water conservation program. Participation is limited, so be sure to apply before funds run out!

Saving Water Saves $$$
Irrigation systems need regular maintenance. It’s a good idea to check them regularly, to make sure they’re as efficient as possible.
A smart irrigation controller can help conserve water by limiting irrigation during cold and/or wet weather.
In addition, it’s very easy to control via your smartphone. For example, even when you’re away on vacation, you can connect to your system via the Internet. It’s easy to check to make sure you aren’t overwatering.
I took advantage of a partial rebate program back in 2017, when I bought a Hunter Hydrawise irrigation controller. I love being able to adjust watering cycles and frequency anywhere with my iPhone. It’s also very convenient to be able to use my phone to test the system. I can turn any stations on and off with the app.
